Here we share our overall framework for creating a Community Based Engineering module as well as three sample CBE modules that we’ve enacted with teacher collaborators in three different urban public schools.  The framework offers guidance for anyone hoping to engage their own students in Community Based Engineering, and the sample modules provide a window into what CBE learning looks like in action. The sample modules focused on three major problems within school communities: watering plants when there is no easy water access, growing plants when there is very limited open space, and renovating an outdated outdoor classroom. Our team of teachers and researchers hoped these choices of community problems would help students understand science and engineering as a part of their community life and not as purely academic or abstract content.

Use our CBE Framework and sample learning modules for inspiration to create your own classroom engineering, and see how Portable Maker Studios can enable your class to build!
